Over the years I’ve uncovered some tricks to make homebrewing easier. These are 10 staples I keep around that you might not expect to have a place in your brewery.

  1. Butterfly Hose Clamps – Different colors for different sizes. The most common ones I use are here. I suggest getting a couple packs of these. I use these on all my hoses. Anything that’s pouring liquid and anything that has gas going, it’s really important to make a proper seal. They make transferring much easier.
  2. Rubber Bands – I used to use tape but given that malt is inherently flourly and dusty, the tape is only good for one use and it’s hard to reuse so that’s why rubber bands are much better. I also use this Viewtainer as a rubber band dispenser.
  3. Spray Bottles – A hand pump or my favorite a Hudson sprayer this is what I use for sanitizer all the time. Standard pump sprayer if you like carpal tunnel here.
  4. Bleach – If something has been sitting around for a while, I highly recommend using bleach and especially for cleaning hoses. Bleach is also an efficient and cheaper sanitizing option just make sure to get it unscented.
  5. Sharpies – I write on everything with sharpies. I figured out you can remove sharpie with just rubbing alcohol. I use it on all my stainless steel, some glass and even some plastic items.
  6. Grip Clips aka A Clamp – I use these mainly to connect things. They’re super strong. I’ve actually used these outside when using my brew in a bag. Basically when I’m rolling up my bag, I will clip these to the board that I’m rolling it on to. Multiple sizes can be found here.
  7. Cord Wrappers – These work great for keeping small tubes organized and from unravelling.
  8. A Large Black T-Shirt – If you don’t have stainless steel or UV protected fermenters, a large t-shirt is your best friend. The neck hole is just about enough to go around the lip and will go all the way to the bottom. I’m not giving you a link for black T-shirts, I believe in you. If you really want one you can order a Flora Brewing one on my website here florabrewing.com/shop
  9. Microfiber Towels – I have microfiber towels everywhere! You want something that’s not abrasive. These absorb liquid extremely well.
  10. Makita Cordless Vacuum: The workhorse of my brewery. It’s like a dustbuster and saves me after a messy day of brewing. On my wishlist is actually the Dyson Cordless Vacuum.
